Dimethyl sulfoxide (abbreviated as DMSO) is an organic solvent that belongs to the class of sulfoxide compounds.

DMSO was discovered as early as 1866, but its use in humans began only in the early 1960s. In 1973, the product was approved again in Switzerland, and in 1978 in Germany for medical applications. DMSO is a sulfur compound derived from tree wood.

It occurs in liquid and solid (crystalline) states, with its freezing point depending on its purity. DMSO with a purity of 99.9% has a higher freezing point (around 18°C), which is why it can transition from a liquid to a solid state at or slightly below room temperature.
